The MTX-R is based on the MTX, a regulator that was developed in accordance with the very cold water test of the US Navy's Experimental Diving Unit. Thanks to innovations in its design, the MTX-R regulator operates in near-freezing water at depths of over 60 metres.

The MTX-R offers excellent performance in cold water and considerably reduces the risk of continuous flow. This has been achieved through a number of improvements, including an innovative end cap and environmental diaphragm, a forged body for the first stage offering maximum thermal preference, a ribbed clamp and a redesigned and enlarged heat exchanger for the second stage, with metal incorporated into the front cover design.
